Appalachian's Language and Culture Summer School at Universität Trier

Appalachian’s Summer Program in Germany has been a yearly event since 1982, and is still one of the best kept secrets in study abroad programs. In 2000, Appalachian established the Language and Culture Summer School in Trier in cooperation with the University of Trier, which was established in 1492. Founded by the Romans in 16 B.C., Trier is the oldest city in Germany. Tucked away in the famous Moselle valley, which prides itself on its rich cultural history of wine-growing introduced by the Romans, students can experience the beginning of German culture with visits to Celtic settlements and Roman artifacts, and visit both the birth place of Christianity in Germany and the birth place of Karl Marx. The city with its university and its many cultural events adds to the charm of the program.

The program offers Appalachian students interaction with German university students in a vibrant environment, and offers intensive German language and culture classes, as well as service-learning projects. There are also many excursions in the region to make your stay even more enjoyable.

The summer program is an excellent choice for students on any level - beginning students wanting to accelerate their study of German, advanced students wanting a first exposure to the German-speaking world before graduation, and those wishing to finish their language requirement in Germany. A first summer in Trier is excellent preparation for spending a semester or year abroad.

Students participating in Appalachian’s Summer Program in Germany during the summer, have the option of staying in Trier to enroll in the International Summer School at University of Trier during the month of August. Appalachian students receive free housing  and free tuition if they enroll in the International Summer School at University of  Trier and might wish to continue studying in Trier. Semester housing is also free for App students.  During the month of September there is also a free pre-semester German language and orientation program in Trier before the regular term starts in October.

Three Frequently-Unknown Facts:

 1. It's less expensive than you think. These days, study abroad doesn't cost much more than your regular university expenses here. During the Language and Culture Summer School Study Program at Universität Trier you can complete six hours of academic credit in just one month and have the two remaining months free for summer work at home. And semester - and academic-year programs cost essentially what they would here. You do have to cover air fare, insurance, and a small administrative cost for placement.

 2. Your financial aid applies. If you participate in any official study abroad program with ASU, you can apply any financial aid you regularly receive to program costs. Financial aid is also available for the Language and Culture Summer School Study Program at Universität Trier. We encourage all students going abroad to file a financial aid form, even if you don't normally receive financial aid.

 3. Your course work transfers. Courses taken abroad transfer back to ASU and will count towards graduation. By planning carefully and working with an advisor ahead of time, it is even possible to replace specific ASU courses from distribution requirements with courses you take abroad. The key is to work out an academic plan early and to talk with your advisors in German and in your college.
